Muller Completes Hui Basket Sculpture: Come Check it Out!

Over the course of the last 10 days, visiting artist Mavis Muller invited the public to observe, participate or otherwise interact as she created a large scale basket outside of the Hui's Christopher Gartner Children's Studio. "Through the art forms of contemporary basketry, photography, poetry and storytelling comes the voice of the natural world," states Muller. As she weaves intricate baskets using consciously gathered natural materials, she introduces the grasses, plants, trees, and landscapes as carriers of messages, stories, and earthly blessings. Take a look at the photos below or come by the Hui to see the beautiful sculpture for yourself!

Meet the artist tomorrow, Feb 16, at the FREE artist talk & slide show "Public Art as a Healing Force" from 5:00 - 6:30 pm in the Children's Studio.Students from Seabury Middle School's Winterim Program take part in the final stages of the sculpture design.

"Today some of the gals from the ceramic class came by to check out the big basket and they had fun with the Basket of Safe Passage that will be placed at the very top of the basket sculpture. They wrote their "valentine" love notes to the whales and tucked it inside, and then tied a rainbow ribbon on the outside for the protection of the ocean water that they live in. Very sweet." - Muller
