Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center is pleased to present the annual King Kekaulike High School Student Arts Integrated Showcase, FREE and open to the public on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 7 P.M. Featuring dramatic and musical performances, creative writing, and a gallery exhibit of original student-made visual art in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and fashion design, this annual collaboration by King Kekaulike's Fine Arts Department and Hui No`eau is a true celebration of artistic inspiration.
“Public schools are facing very tough economic challenges right now, with the arts under serious budgetary scrutiny as Congress considers how best to develop reading, writing and arithmetic,” says Susan Scofield, Principal, King Kekaulike High School, “art is what makes life interesting and worthwhile- it grabs a student’s interest and engages them in a new way that other subjects may not. It is too great a sacrifice, and one we need to come together to voice our support of as a community. This event is a celebration of the spirit of King Kekaulike; it is an exhibition of the application of all of the skills they have learned and practiced; it is a way for not only parents and families, but the entire community, to behold the heart and soul of these young lives. The Hui is a perfect venue for these students, who rarely have the opportunity to showcase their work in such a beautiful, community-based venue where everyone is welcome to experience their work. Please come see for yourself! Check out the cooperative atmosphere in all its delightful forms. Support the arts both in our public schools as well as in this beautiful place.”
“When I think of the time, expense, dedication, and services provided in-kind by the Hui, including their premier gallery space, a stage with electricity and lighting, paint and hanging supplies, supervisory personnel, scheduled time that might have been lent elsewhere, but instead donated completely free of charge just and only for our school, I realize that words can hardly express what all of this has meant to us over the years,” remarks Robert O’Connor, fine arts teacher at King Kekaulike High School, “Thank you so very much for your time and effort, the levels of which I may never know as you seem to manage everything so effortlessly, but excellently. I know that you feel as rewarded as we do here at school.”
The event is open to the public with the gallery exhibition open through Saturday April 16th. Please come show your support for public school art programming!
